Google Street View: exercising your right to object

Street View image collection

As part of its Google Street View service, Google regularly captures images on public roads in Luxembourg in order to update the imagery available in Google Maps.

Street View allows users to view 360° panoramic images of streets, places and landscapes through Google Maps, Google Earth and the Google Maps mobile applications.

Information regarding the periods during which Street View vehicles operate and the areas concerned is published directly by Google on a dedicated webpage:

Routes and schedules may be adapted due to weather, technical or operational constraints.

Right to object and protection of privacy

Data subjects have the right to object to the processing of their personal data in the context of the Street View service.

To protect individuals’ privacy, Google states that it automatically blurs, in particular:

  • faces;
  • vehicle licence plates.

However, if you believe that an image published in Street View infringes your privacy or that certain elements have not been properly blurred, you may request directly from Google:

  • the blurring of a face;
  • the blurring of a licence plate;
  • additional blurring of a house, vehicle or any other identifiable element;
  • the removal or limitation of visibility of certain visual information.

How can you exercise your right to object?

To submit a request to Google:

  1. Open the relevant image in Google Street View;
  2. Click on “Report a problem” in the bottom right corner of the image;
  3. Complete the form provided by Google, specifying the subject of your request;
  4. Click on “Submit”.
